Training for Tourist Hosts
This project emerged as an alternative to an in-person training program previously managed by the National Parks Administration (APN) in collaboration with the local government of El Chaltén. The program had to be discontinued due to various challenges, including the exponential increase in visitation, lack of staff, and inadequate physical space.
To ensure its continuity and expand its reach, a virtual, free, and community-accessible proposal was designed in collaboration with the Amigos del Parque Nacional Los Glaciares Association, the APN, and the local government of El Chaltén. For the past three years, this training has been delivered in this format, allowing it to remain active and accessible to a broader audience.
The primary goal of the course remains: to train local hosts, providing them with tools to become key allies in environmental conservation and incident prevention at the destination. Such is its importance that, since 2021, and in compliance with a municipal ordinance, this training has been mandatory for all stakeholders involved in tourism in El Chaltén.
The virtual format was developed in response to the need to modernize the program and facilitate the renewal of content, ensuring that the information remains up-to-date. Moreover, its asynchronous modality offers flexibility, enabling participants to progress at their own pace and convenience without compromising the quality of the training.
The content, endorsed by APN, is organized into five modules covering essential aspects, including strategies for guiding visitors based on their interests and profiles, promoting safe activities, and preventing potential incidents during their stay.
The course concludes with an in-person session for those who complete the virtual modules. This final meeting fosters interaction between participants and APN staff, reinforcing the knowledge gained. The in-person component also provides an opportunity to share experiences and establish common goals for upcoming seasons.
We consider this training a fundamental support tool for the prevention efforts carried out by APN at the start of each tourist season. Furthermore, it promotes good environmental and tourism practices, standing out as a key instrument for contributing to the sustainability of the destination.
